HISTORY

1944 Dodge WC62 6×6

This 1944 Dodge WC62 6×6 is a 1 1/2 ton version of the more familiar 3/4 ton WC series. The WC62 was developed at the suggestion of Maj. Gen. Courtney Hodges (US Chief of Infantry), when the US Army increased the size of a rifle squad from 8 to 12 members, as the men would no longer fit on on the familiar 3/4 size trucks. Though similar in many ways to its smaller brother, there are some unique attributes.

Following Hodges’ suggestion, Dodge lengthened their 3/4 ton trucks 48 inches and added a third driven axle. This gave enough room for four extra men with their gear, and was an easy solution to what could have been a complicated logistical nightmare. Though much was shared between the two trucks, certain improvements were made with the development of the these later models, primarily in the driveline and suspension which Dodge then passed down to the smaller versions. 1944 Dodge WC62 6x6 One significant improvement was the inclusion of a 2-speed transfer case. This granted greater flexibility both on and off road, which was much needed with the increased load carrying capabilities of the larger truck. From the side, we can see where the stretch in length occurred, and also that this particular truck has the usual body panel waviness that one might expect from a 75 year old ex-military vehicle. 1944 Dodge WC62 6x6 Being derived from the WC51, this truck uses a Chrysler designed L-head six. Power is sent through a 4-speed transmission, and hydraulic brakes bring everything to a stop. A combined total of about 43,000 WC-62 and WC-63 (same as the 62 with the exception of a Braden MU2 winch mounted on the bumper) were produced.
